James DeGale turned on the power with a clinical first round stoppage of Carl Dilks to win the eliminator for the British Super-middleweight Championship tonight (Saturday)
Harlesden's proud Olympic gold medallist went for the jugular from the bell at Birmingham's LG Arena, catching the Liverpudlian with a straight left and a right hook.
Dilks tried in vain to get through DeGale's guard and looked out of his depth when the blue-booted star caught him again with a blistering jab.
DeGale then unleashed a flurry of blows on the ex-soldier, a big left opening up a nasty cut above his right eye. That was enough for the referee to step between the pair, ending the contest after just 2.54 and extending DeGale's pro record to 8-0.
DeGale raised his arms in triumph while Dilks, to his credit, had no arguments with the decision and skulked out of the arena unnoticed.
It was Chunky's third first round stoppage by knock-out, although this was his most convincing yet against an opponent who promised to rearrange the pretty boy's features. Sadly for Dilks it was all talk and no action.
Expect DeGale's British title fight to be on another Frank Warren blockbuster in December.
