Pinner Potter Martin Gould plots another Hendry upset

Martin Gould aims to teach Stephen Hendry another lesson when he makes his Shanghai Masters debut next week.

The Pinner Potter will face the six-time World Champion in the first round on Wednesday providing he overcomes Chinese wild-card Li Hang on Monday. Gould beat the Scotsman in last year's Welsh Open and is relishing taking him on again now he he started to make a name for himself in the sport.

The 28-year-old's brand of attacking snooker on his World Championship debut earlier this year won him a legion of fans and he is hoping to make a similar impact in the Far East.

“I would love to play Stephen again and send him home early,” said Gould. “I have beatne him once before and I am sure he will be wanting to set the record straight. I would love to win the tournament but would be happy to reach the quarter or semi finals.

“But I have to beat Li Hang first, who is a danger. I have beaten him twice before but I will have to keep my wits about me in front of his home crowd.”

Gould has risen to No.27 in the world rankings and hopes to consolidate his position within the top 32 before aiming for the top 16 by the end of the season.

After he returns from Shanghai Gould will prepare for his World Open debut in Glasgow. He qualified with 3-0 wins over Noppon Saengkham and Matthew Selt, who was given a harsh lesson.

“He potted one ball in the entire match,” added Gould. “I am producing some good stuff so far this season and hopefully I can carry that on.”
