James DeGale came through a tricky test with an unconvincing 40-37 points victory over Nathan King in Newcastle on Saturday night.
The fight, reduced from six three minute rounds to four because of TV scheduling, was not for the purists as the Olympic gold medallist laboured his way past the rugged Welshman.
King recovered well from a slight cut below his right eye in a cagey first round to give DeGale food for thought. For a big unit he can shift his feet well and this caused DeGale to miss with two wild swings over the top.
However, the Harlesden star delivered a crunching left to King's ribs before the bruiser from Mountain Ash countered with a straight right jab. This appeared to sting DeGale into action, the 23-year-old unloading four quick-fire lefts followed by a right.
He finally came into his own in the penultimate round, softening King up with a couple of deft left hooks and a flurry of blows with the back of the right glove.
King found his target with a solid right down the middle but DeGale shrugged it off and put the seal on a sluggish performance with a flashing right jab.
