Brothers use 'Gayler' force

KENTON Road Club's best performances last week came in the LVRC Veterans event on Wednesday at Hillingdon and on Sunday at Horsmonden, near Tonbridge Wells.

Wednesday's 30-mile circuit race saw brothers Dave and Des Gayler compete in a fast race, with Dave defending in the bunch while Des attacked at the front. The team tactics worked, and Des finished fourth overall and as first A-category rider. Dave finished in the main field.

Sunday's 54-mile VC Bayeux Landscapes road race saw Brendan Heaslip in his element in the hilly Weald of Kent. Despite struggling to gain fitness Heaslip managed a good overall placing in the 40-54 years race and second in his age group.

Former Kenton rider John McMillan, now with Finchley RT, came second in his age group and seventh overall in the aged-56-plus race.
