Leiston 1- 1 Wealdstone
WEALDSTONE’s search for a third away win of the campaign goes on after a late defensive lapse condemned them to a draw at Leiston on Tuesday night.
A 3-0 win at Cray on November 3 was the last time Stones brought all three points back from their travels and this latest stumble meant a chance to close in on runaway leaders Whitehawk was spurned.
Gordon Bartlett’s (pictured) men are now nine points adrift of the men from Sussex with just one game in hand.
Yet for much of the trip to in-form Leiston it looked as if Stones would achieve their much-needed win on the road.
Playing into the wind in the first-half, the visitors defended stoically, kicking one off the line before snatching the lead on 28 minutes.
Chris Moore held the ball up superbly before releasing Peter Dean down the left and when the cross came in Tom Pett swept home his first goal since November.
A fantastic save from Rikki Banks prevented the home side from drawing level before the break, but Stones failed to build on their advantage after the break. Peter Dean skied an excellent chance to settle matters and Bartlett’s men paid the price 12 minutes from time when a header back to Banks fell short and Emmanuel Osei nipped in to level the scores.
Spurred into action, Stones might still have won it, Pett ballooning over one great chance before substitute Leon Smith broke clear in stoppage time only to be denied by a great save from home keeper Dan Heath.
