PETER Dean has urged Lee Chappell to give up his dreams about being a winger and concentrate on being ‘the best left back in the league’.
Wealdstone’s former skipper Chappell (pictured) has made no secret of his wish to be released from defensive duties and be free to terrorise opposition right-backs from the left wing position.
However, fellow Stones’ stalwart Dean feels Chappell does not need the attacking brief because his pace and fitness levels mean he can be as big a threat from left back, while helping keep the door locked at the other end of the park.
He said: “Lee Chappell has come to the party this year.
“I tweeted him recently actually because he is always on about playing left wing, but I’ve always said I think he is the best left-back in the league and he should stay there.
“When he plays left back, how many goals does he get involved in?”
The departure of Alan Massey – the only other regular candidate for left-back duties at The Vale – to Braintree makes it all the more likely Chappell will have to stick to full-back duties for the foreseeable future, pending the arrival of further cover.
However, Tommy Brewer let slip this week that he played left-back in a behind closed doors friendly recently.
He said: “Chaps likes to get forward and Gordon likes to swap people about a bit, so there are lots of different positions and opportunities to get in the side.
“So I’ve got to keep knocking on the door and showing I can do it.”
