Harrow Borough 1 Wingate & Finchley 2
A WEEK is a long time in football - just ask Elvijs Putnins.
Seven days previously Harrow Borough’s Latvian goalkeeper was basking in the glory of scoring a goal with a 90-yard punt over his opposite number, but a week on from those events Putnins was red-carded as the hosts lost a vital basement scrap with visitors Wingate & Finchley.
Missing Simeon Akinola through injury the hosts started slowly and were behind on eight minutes when Anthony Thomas collected Jack Hutchinson’s cross from the right and thumped a right foot shot into the far corner.
Danny Leech’s superb tackle on Daniel Brown prevented a second, but Borough levelled on 24 minutes when Rob Wolleaston surged to the by-line  and crossed for Saheed Sankoh to apply the finishing touch. Â
It should have been 2-1 two minutes later when Gary Jones burst forward before releasing Emmanuel Akokhia on the left, but when crossed from the left his fellow AFC Wimbledon loanee Merrifield scuffed his shot wide with the goal gaping.
Borough lost skipper Wolleaston to illness but were still dictating when disaster struck on 55 minutes.
James Burgess carelessly lost possession in midfield and Brown was sent racing clear. Putnins raced out but Brown shot early and the keeper handled outside the box producing the instant red card.
Leech took over in goal with Ruddock Yala coming on at centre-half with Shaun Lucien the man sacrificed and worse followed as Sankoh went off with an eye injury, meaning a re-introduction to Borough colours for Jon-Jo Bates.
Leech was soon in action, doing brilliantly to get a touch to a Wayne Sullivan effort with the winger clean through, the ball hitting the inside of the post before being scrambled clear.
However, O’Sullivan popped up on the other side of the pitch seconds later to score what proved to be the winner, lashing home an unstoppable shot into the far corner.
