Hatch End Hawks 7 Blackheath 9
A SLOW start cost Hatch End Hawks dearly in their first league match of 2013.
Hatch End went into this one fully rested after an enforced break because of the weather but were edged out by a stubborn Blackheath outfit at Regent’s Park on Sunday.
Hawks’ Elle Davis said: “It was a great fight back from the Hawks this week, showing our determination and commitment. It’s a real shame we couldn’t make up the deficit in the last quarter of the match, but we’re looking forward to the next game.”
In truth, the match was won and lost in the first quarter as Blackheath grabbed psychological early strikes to race into a 6-0 lead.
Hawks got forward and had some shots on goal themselves, but they failed to find the breakthrough they really needed.
After a quick time-out, Hawks picked up their game and doubled up well to contain their energetic opponents, as well as notching twice themselves before the interval.
Alana Lukas led the way in the second half, taking her total to five for the afternoon, as Hatch End finished the match strongly.
Blackheath had just enough in the tank to get over the line and win by a two-goal margin, but Hawks keeper Natalie Balfe had kept things alive right to the end with some good saves.
The Hawks squad also included Debbie Sumner, Emma Barlow, Alex Clifford, Michelle Berendt, Becky Singleton, Lara Owen, Tiffany Lake, Katie Bohane, Abi Benford, Carina Western, Nicole Sawdaye and Antonia Hudson.
