THERE was no new year hangover for Harrow as they maintain their place at the top of Herts/Middlesex One with their first victory of 2013 away at London Welsh.
Adam West and Brian O’Malley tries got things going in the first period before Dave West and player-boss Chris West finished the job after the interval.
The bonus-point win leaves Harrow five points clear of closest rivals Hackney and club chairman Andy Smart was relieved to get the win after a scrappy performance.
“We weren’t good but we still won and that’s what’s important,” Smart said. “The problem was that we’ve only played twice in the last six weeks for various reasons and I think it showed to be honest. I’m sure we’ll play better than that in future games and lose.
“I was a little bit concerned about the lack of recent games. Some people weren’t back after Christmas and we had a couple of lads out injured as well which didn’t help. When we played them earlier in the season they scored three tries against us, so they were a capable side.”
Harrow entertain a West London team that find themselves at the wrong end of the table this weekend but the strugglers head into the match having picked up their first victory of the campaign against Bank of England on Saturday.
“They have just got their first win and they’ve got some decent players,” Smart added. “I think they’re perhaps a bit weak in their front five so we will look to exploit that if we can. At the end of the day, they scored four tries against us when we played them last time but we’ve tightened up our defence since then.
“Hopefully there will be a couple of training sessions this week and we will perform much better. It’s an old cliché but we really are just taking it one game at a time.”
Mike Smith is the only injury doubt for Harrow this weekend as he nurses a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out for two weeks.
Meanwhile, in Herts/Middlesex Two, Pinner and Grammarians scheduled opponents Chess Valley were awarded a home win.
