LEE Chappell has been best friends with Danny Spendlove since they were in short trousers, but that will not stop the Stones full back ‘doing a number’ on a former team-mate.
Chappell and Spendlove have played on the same side since they were eight or nine at Turnford School, in Cheshunt. Stints at Watford Youth followed before both moved to Cheshunt. Chappell was the first to arrive at Wealdstone and Spendy followed shortly afterwards.
But Spendlove is now at Concord Rangers, and Saturday’s trip to Canvey Island will be the first time they have been opponents – and with Spendlove on the right wing for the Beachboys, it will be Chappell’s job to keep him quiet.
Needless to say, the cheeky chappie feels it is his old mate who should be quaking in his boots.
He joked: “We all know Spendy doesn’t do 50-50 tackles. I know how he plays, so we will see, but I’m confident we can do a job on him.”
For all the banter, Chappell does not want his sideshow with Spendlove to distract Stones from the job in hand.
“I know quite a lot of their players and they are a very good team, plus their assistant manager Glen Alzepiedi knows the league well so may have something up his sleeve,” he said.
“There are 11 of us who have all got a job to do and if we do them right, we should beat most teams in the league.”
