The gift of roses isn't just for hopeless romantics on Valentine’s Day. The queen of all flowers is a lot more versatile – get creative and give them to different people, on any day of the year.
There is thought to be 15,000 varieties of rose, some dating back 5000 years. It is therefore surprising that for some it seems there are only red roses, and they are given only once a year to someone you love.
A white rose, popular at weddings, means pure innocence, or 'happy love'. It can also mean youthfulness. Give white roses to younger members of your family at their graduation or wedding. Another good occasion is for the mother of a newborn child.
Deep burgundy or dark red roses symbolise 'unconscious beauty'. These will cheer up a friend who has low self-esteem or an older relative who may be lonely.
Yellow roses are the ultimate token of friendship and joy. Surprise friends with bright sunshine roses to show you really care. Be careful though: some believe yellow roses are a sign of jealousy, so make sure the receiver is clear of your intentions.
Orange roses denote enthusiasm and fascination. A friend landed their dream job? Give them orange roses. If you admire someone, perhaps not romantically but professionally or spiritually, give orange roses.
If you want to show appreciation or gratitude, give pink or peach roses. Give to a loyal friend or family member to say thank you for their support.
Light pink roses represent gentleness and grace. These are good roses to send to show sympathy or to give someone who has been through a trauma.
Black roses, which are artificially cultivated, mean death. However, these are not recommended to send at funerals – choose light pink instead.
Red and white roses, given together, signify unity. Use red and white roses to show your support – perhaps for a local sports team or a charity.
Lavender roses are for enchantment. Before you send a red rose to a potential love, send lavender to show an interest without scaring them off.
Of course the red rose should not be forgotten. The ultimate symbol of love, passion and eternity, the red rose will never go out of fashion as the first class way of saying I love you.
