FRIENDS and neighbours have paid tribute to an elderly woman with ‘a beautiful soul’ who died in a collision in Edgware.
Pedestrian Lilian Hutchison, 84, was killed at the junction of Methuen Road and Camrose Avenue on December 11.
A post mortem examination revealed she died of head and chest injuries.
The widow and her neighbour Raksha Vaghela, 54, had both lived in nearby Milford Gardens since the early 1980s and used to always spend Boxing Day together.
Mrs Vaghela said: “We were very good friends. She had a beautiful soul, she was just amazing.
“She was just such a wonderful lady and we would go out so often for lunch or for dinner if it was her birthday.
“I took her to see the Olympic torch come past in Church Road and she was just so happy.
“We would always sit together and chat, but every day we saw each other was like Christmas, we always used to give each other such a big hug. I saw her the day before she died, in the shops with her daughter, and we had made lots of plans for January.
“To get to 84 and be so healthy and for this to happen, it is such a shame.”
Mrs Hutchison enjoyed trips to the countryside and was an active member of the National Trust, visiting many of its properties.
In order to stay fit and healthy she insisted on walking to and from the shops in High Street, Edgware, where her late husband David, who died in 1990, used to own a shoe repair business.
Mrs Hutchison had one daughter from a previous marriage, 54-year-old Barbara, who lived in nearby Buckingham Gardens and with whom she usually spent Christmas.
Neighbours Matthew Thomas, 25, and Roseanna Carter, 24, said the 84-year-old was well known in the area.
Mr Thomas said: “She was the kindest woman I know, apart from my grandma. She would always say hello.
“She never let me or my mum give her a lift from the shops – she was so active. Her garden is really well kept as well, she did a lot of work.”
Ms Carter said: “It’s even more of a tragedy as she was so active and so fit for an 84-year-old. She wasn’t frail at all and was very healthy.”
The 28-year-old driver of a Volkswagen van was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed to return on a date in January.
