A CROOKED mortgage broker has been jailed for three years for masterminding a £2.4million housing fraud.
Varinder Amrit, 48, of Augustus Close, Stanmore, amassed what Chelmsford Crown Court heard was a ‘property empire’ with the help of an 85-year-old middle man and two accountants.
The Financial Services Authority-registered mortgage broker submitted applications for mortgages in the names of unwitting relatives – including his own wife – using falsified paperwork.
Amrit earlier admitted 21 counts of fraud, one of false accounting and one of obtaining a money transfer by deception and was jailed on Friday last week for 30 months concurrently for several offences and a further six months, also to run concurrently.
His co-defendants, who were from Essex and Croydon, were sentenced five days earlier.
The prosecution followed an investigation by Herts Police’s economic crime unit.
n We were incorrectly told that the fraud amounted to £5m, which we reported in last week’s Observer.
