AN IN-HOUSE lettings agency run by Harrow Council has helped its 300th customer find a home - and is appealing for more homeowners to join.
The Help2Let scheme was launched in February to provide a way for tenants languishing on the council's 4,000-strong housing waiting list and looking to rent an affordable house or flat to find a suitable property in the private sector potentially anywhere in the country.
Marian Mitchell was congratulated on being the 300th client assisted by the agency with the presentation of flowers by the council's portfolio holder for housing Councillor Bob Currie (Labour) on Monday October 22.
The hairdresser said: “Getting onto the Help2Let scheme really helped me to find a nice home.
“I really like our new home and we are all very comfortable and feel secure here.”
Ms Mitchell was facing potential homelessness with her daughters, aged 16 and 9, when her previous landlord issued an eviction notice in June.
The council placed the trio in emergency accommodation before referring the family to Help2Let and Ms Mitchell was soon able to register an interest on, and secure a lease for, a three-bed house.
Mr Currie said: “I am delighted that our highly successful Help2Let scheme has helped Marian and so many others with their accommodation needs.
“At a time of such unprecedented shortage of affordable housing and rising housing need, Help2Let is proving highly successful in bringing landlords and tenants together and to meet housing need.”
Tenants - who must be in receipt of housing benefit and must be referred to the scheme by the council's housing advisory service - have to find the private accommodation themselves through classified advertisements and estate agents' windows and the suchlike although Help2Let does advertise available properties on offer from participating landlords.
The Help2let service offers landlords a guaranteed rental income, a two-month bond, optional tenant management services and no management or letting fee.
It also runs tenants information sessions, landlord conferences and landlord accreditation training courses.
