LABOUR will appoint a permanent replacement for Councillor Brian Gate, who resigned as portfolio holder for children, schools and families following his arrest on suspicion of possession of indecent images of children.
Councillor leader Bill Stephenson made a short announcement at yesterday evening's cabinet committee meeting explaining Mr Gate had been suspended by the council and he had stepped down from his cabinet post.
He said Councillor Mitzi Green, who was Mr Gate's immediate predecessor as portfolio holder for children's services for two years until May, would take over temporarily the responsibility before a long-term successor to Mr Gate is chosen.
Mr Gate, 57, of Butler Road, West Harrow - a Labour ward councillor for West Harrow - was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on September 24 on suspicion of possession of indecent images of children at a residential address in Harrow and was bailed, pending further enquiries, until an unspecified date in early November.
