A ‘DEPRAVED’ paedophile who admitted 27 offences of child sex abuse, including the rape of a four- month-old girl, has been sentenced to life in prison.
St Albans Crown Court heard on Wednesday last week how former prison officer John Maber shared his perversions online with other paedophiles both across the country and internationally.
Of the many abuses the 47-year-old carried out, the court heard how some were committed in South Harrow as well as in Hertfordshire.
Maber, of Oundle Avenue, Bushey, was handed two life sentences and was told he will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least 10 years.
Detective Inspector Damien Kennedy, who led the inquiry, said after the hearing: “John Maber is a wicked and depraved offender who callously procured the abuse of children for his own gratification. He was predatory in its truest sense.
“The sentencing today reflects the hard work and committed effort of specialist agencies who devote their services to identifying paedophiles like Maber and bringing them to justice.
“Maber was part of a network of paedophiles who communicated with each other via chat logs, often arranging the commission of sexual acts against children. Through Maber this network was identified and its members prosecuted.”
Specialist officers from the Paedophile Investigation Unit arrested Maber on December 2 last year following intelligence from the Child Exploitation Online Protection (CEOP) Centre.
The CEOP identified Maber after receiving information from police in New Zealand, where he had been sharing material.
Maber’s online activity was of such concern that immediate action was taken by Hertfordshire Police to arrest him once he was identified.
The follow up investigation took officers across the country and 15 other arrests were made.
As a direct result, officers say that 30 children have been safeguarded and are now out of danger.
Maber admitted two counts of rape, six counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, sexual activity with a child and cruelty, two counts of administrating a substance with intent, common assault, aggravated commission of a child sex offence and engaging in sexual activity with a child.
He also admitted three counts of distributing indecent photographs of a child, two of taking indecent photographs of a child, six of possessing indecent photographs of a child and possessing extreme pornography.
