MUSIC, sport and fun are promised – although sunshine may not – at a family Olympic-themed festival.
St Peter’s Church in Sumner Road, West Harrow, is hosting the summer spectacular, OlympicFest over the weekend of June 30 and July 1.
With the cancellation of Harrow Council’s Under One Sky cultural extravaganza this year on safety grounds, OlympicFest is being billed as ‘Harrow’s biggest community festival of the summer’. It is hoped it attracts the thousands that normally attand Under One Sky.
England’s netball team star Rachel Dunn, who won a bronze medal at the World Netball Championships 2011, will provide a netball masterclass while visitors can also participate in a mini Olympics for the under-eights, a five-a-side football tournament, a tug-of-war, a surf simulator and enjoy a classic bikes display and a raffle.
St Peter’s vicar, the Reverend Will Van Der Hart, said: “We are so excited to be hosting OlympicFest this year in celebration of the London Olympics and thrilled of course that Rachel Dunn has agreed to come and offer her expertise to young sports enthusiasts.”
Live music is promised from local bands Something Blue, Concrete Disco and iTrio with the West Harrow Community Choir also set to perform.
Children from Vaughan Primary School in The Gardens, West Harrow, have prepared an Olympic-themed dance and gymnastics routine to wow partygoers.
The event, which has been rebranded from HarrowFest to tie in with the London Games, will be closed with a screening of the Oscar-winning classic Chariots Of Fire at St Peter’s Church Hall.
Mr Van Der Hart said: “The atmosphere at the Big Jubilee Picnic was incredible and we are very optimistic that our neighbours will come out in great numbers in support of OlympicFest too.”l OlympicFest is in West Harrow Recreation Ground off The Ridgeway, West Harrow, on Saturday, June 30, from 1pm to 6pm and on Sunday, July 1, from 1pm to 5pm. If it rains the festival will move to St Peter’s Church and visitors should check www.stpetersharrow.co.uk for updates.
