AN APPARENT Good Samaritan turned out anything but when he stole an elderly woman’s gold necklace moments after offering to carry her shopping.
The thief snatched the jewellery from the 81-year-old victim’s neck at North Wembley station in East Lane.
He approached the woman as she rode the escalator towards platform two, which serves northbound Bakerloo Line and London overground trains, and offered to help her with her shopping.
She declined and suddenly the man grabbed the necklace and ran off towards platform one, which serves southbound services.
British Transport Police’s investigating officer Detective Constable Mike Baker said: “This was an utterly despicable theft from an elderly, frail and vulnerable woman who was clearly unable to defend herself. Fortunately she was unharmed but was still left very shaken by what took place.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident at noon on Friday, May 19, or has any information can call the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference B9/LUA of 23/05/2012.
