Councillor Kairul Kareema Marikar presents Harrow mayor Councillor Asad Omar with gifts from Sri Lanka
SRI LANKAN officials celebrated the Asian country's strong links with Harrow this week by sending memento's to the borough's Mayor.
Councillor Kairul Kareema Marikar, who serves the West Harrow ward, presented gifts from Kandy, her birthplace, and Sri Lankan capital Colombo to councillor Asad Omar following a personal visit to Sri Lanka.
The two plaques were given to her by social walfare minister Azmin Marika and special commisioner to columbo municipal council, Mr Omar Kamil.
The pair presented them to councillor Marika, Harrow's first Sri Lankan woman councillor, during personal visits to the two towns as a small token of the high esteem in which they hold the borough.
Councillor Marikar said: "Britain has a long historical link with Sri Lanka. I started my working life as a food and beverage manager in the Queen Hotel, Kandy which is named after Her Majesty and the UK is renowned for tea-drinking, a product Sri Lanka is renowned for world wide.
“Harrow has a large Sri Lankan population so there is an obvious link already which I want to promote. Kandy sent a beautiful token with flags, it is a beautiful town and I hope Harrow residents enjoy it.”
