A MOTORIST aged 27 has died in hospital after his car smashed into a wall in Harrow Weald on Sunday evening.
The man, behind the wheel of a black Ford Escort RS Turbo, was rushed to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, west London, after paramedics were called to the scene at 5.10pm.
He sustained severe head and chest injuries but died on Tuesday morning.
Police say his vehicle careered off the road at the junction of Uxbridge Road and Oxhey Lane before smashing in to a wall, and other cars may have been involved.
Nearby resident and chairwoman of Weald Residents' Association, Paddy Lyne, did not see the crash but said that the stretch of road leading up to the roundabout has always been a cause for concern.
She said: “I don't know anything about the incident itself but I have been living here for more than 50 years and we have always been trying to get something done to make the area surrounding that roundabout safer.
“For years we have been pushing to get speed cameras installed on the side coming down from Brockley Hill because cars gather so much speed heading onto the roundabout. Not too many years ago a lady was killed on the Courtenay Avenue side of that roundabout, it really can be quite dangerous. Unfortunately it has been an accident waiting to happen.”
The police are now appealing to witnesses of the crash to come forward with any information and call the Road Death Investigation Unit based at Alperton Traffic Garage on 020 8998 5319.
