Victory over barbarism

I WAS delighted to hear last week that the Parliament of Catalonia has voted to ban bullfighting, despite its place in Spain's cultural tradition. For a long time I have been concerned by this barbaric practice and last week was an important step towards the total ban I would like to see.

Bullfighting is a continuation of a cruel age from the past, in which the suffering of animals was a spectacle for public entertainment. These practices continue to reinforce the idea that animals are nothing more than objects we may use at our whim, and they have no place in today's Europe.

Since being elected I have received numerous letters objecting to bullfighting. I am determined to make sure that no money from the EU is ever used to fund this bloody tradition.

I look forward to the day when this ban is extended across the whole of Spain.
