THE economic crisis in this country is far from over and that was no more evident than in the newly elected coalition government's long list of stringent cuts proposed in this week's emergency budget.
But given that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government plans to cut back in so many areas, it was a huge relief to see that ministers have committed themselves to putting money into rebuilding the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
The hospital, which not only serves people in Harrow but also patients from across the country, has long been in dire need of funding and the result of the general election put the promise of a cash injection into doubt.
So praise should be levelled at the new administration for not politicising the issue.
It would have been easy for them to back out of the refurbishment, not just because of the troubling state of the nation's finances but because it was a Labour government proposal.
So, we can continue to look forward to the benefits of the provision of £81million for this project, which will enhance healthcare in the borough immeasurably, and for years to come.
