Pooling cash is in interest of all of us

IT IS good news in more ways than one that Hatch End Community Pool has reopened following a refurbishment.

Not only will the revamp of the building, in Hatch End, provide a more pleasant experience for existing visitors, it should entice more to come.

And given that it is one of only three public pools in the borough, its reopening has not come a moment too soon to allow swimmers to take advantage of Harrow Council's subsidised free swimming initiative and, of course, the predicted uptake spurred by the London 2012 Olympics.

The makeover cost £800,000, with the council committing £225,000. It is praiseworthy that councillors did respond positively to residents' concerns and managed to find the sizeable amount, even during these tough economic times.

The balance came from Sport England, demonstrating how national cash - even if in the greater scheme of things it is a relatively small sum - can trickle down and make a palpable difference at a district level.

We just need the council and its partners to continue to lobby for more central government money to come our way to bolster other deserving projects.
